United Nations

SOS Children’s Villages International has been in "special consultative status" with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations (UN) since 1995. This status is granted to international NGOs that share common objectives with the UN and it allows us to make substantial contributions to UN work.

ECOSOC is the central forum for discussing international economic and social issues and for formulating policy recommendations.  In carrying out its mandate, ECOSOC consults with researchers, the private sector and NGOs.

Within this framework, SOS Children’s Villages International further collaborates with several specialised UN agencies and programmes, such as the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the UN Human Rights Council, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Food Programme (WFP).

SOS Children’s Villages International is also associated with the UN Department for Public Information (DPI) which acts as a liaison body between the UN and NGOs and other civil society organisations.
