Canadian donations heading to SOS Children’s Villages and Community Centers in Haiti

9/01/2010 – An Air Transat Airbus is being filled with Canadian humanitarian aid volunteers, food, and supplies that will support relief efforts that are being coordinated from SOS Children’s Villages in Haiti.  It has been cleared to fly out of Montreal in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Donations to the SOS Haiti Emergency Appeal from generous Canadians across the country have to date resulted in $175,000.  This includes $25,000 from Transat, a major corporate partner of SOS Children’s Villages.  SOS Canada used a portion of these funds to purchase the desperately needed supplies that will be sent on this flight. This included medications, first aid supplies, power generators, tents,, and over 2000 kg of food and clothing.

This shipment will be sent to SOS Children’s Village Santo in the Port-au-Prince area where SOS  will focus of our immediate relief work for quake survivors.

Reports from SOS staff on the ground in Santo have confirmed that the SOS families in the SOS Village are managing relatively well, although they continue to camp outside for fear of further quakes or aftershocks.  Electricity and communication links are still out, but so far water and food supplies have been maintained.

The power generators purchased with Canadian donations will be most welcome.

Participants in SOS community center self-help and SOS Family Strengthening Programmes have not been so lucky, however, as a high percentage of their homes were reported collapsed.

Several injuries and deaths have also been reported among the parents in the community programs, and unfortunately many children and families are now living on the streets.

SOS Children’s Villages plans to take immediate measures to assist these people, which include:

1. Providing temporary shelter to unaccompanied children.
2. Bringing together parent committees to aid in the delivery of food and to restore the operation of community centers (which are currently not functioning).
3. Providing food for up to two months for needy families near the 2 SOS Villages and community centers.
4. Collecting data on the needs of families participating in the programs to better define intervention measures.
5. Working with governmental and non-governmental agencies to locate the families of the unaccompanied children.
6. Setting up a mobile medical clinic on the grounds of SOS Children’s Village Santo in partnership with the government of the Dominican Republic

Of primary concern at this time is the immediate delivery of food and emergency supplies to people in the communities. The supplies Canadians have provided through donations to SOS will directly assist them in the weeks to come.

More assistance is still needed for the long recovery.  Please assist with a donation to our Haiti Emergency Appeal
