In a farming community, soil and sand deposited in an irrigation canal does not melt. If not shovelled out in a timely basis it piles up, clogs the water pipes and makes farming impossible. With wind storms over a period of two years, it becomes darn near impossible to keep the long ditches free of soil – especially when people are weak and sick from lack of food and potable water.

Still the men of the community are undaunted, and every day the men work together to dig out the ditch as much as they can.
The farmers spring to action and great hope emerges – still the region is vulnerable because even if the farmers can plant, there are still three to four long months before the crop can be harvested. It will be the end of January before the cupboard can be filled again. Still this is a good moment to be in Gode.
