More than 18 million people across West and Central Africa are in the grip of a growing hunger crisis. Crop shortages, rising food prices and insecurity have left more than one million children facing starvation. An increase in cases of malaria and other diseases is another serious threat for thousands of children.
SOS Children’s Villages is helping children and their families in some of the worst hit areas in Niger, Chad and Mali.
SOS Children’s Villages Canada is focusing its relief efforts in the Kouloun area of Mali. With 10,000 people living in this community, mostly women, Kouloun suffers from high rates of poverty, malnutrition, infant mortality and child abandonment. For more than two years SOS Canada has been working in the area on a program to strengthen families. We know the children, the parents and the needs within the community.
In response to the growing hunger crisis in the community, SOS Children’s Villages will begin a famine relief project to aid 1,200 children and parents.
SOS Children’s Villages famine relief work includes the following:
- Adults will receive a daily ration of grains, beans and vegetable oil to give them the necessary food to prepare for the next harvest.
- SOS Children’s Villages is fighting malnutrition among children under five, particularly those who are severely affected by nutritional deprivation.
- The community will receive assistance with medical needs, water and sanitation and education on methods to prevent acute malnutrition, particularly infants and pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Our project in Kouloun is done in partnership with Canadian government, who will contribute three dollars for every Canadian dollar we invest. That means, for every dollar raised, another 3 will go to helping feed and support children and families in Mali.
SOS Children’s Villages believes that life can be better for the people in Kouloun, Mali. That’s why we’re working with children and families in the region. And that’s why we’re ramping up our food aid to this area.
