SOS Children's Village Monrovia provides aid to some 7,500 Liberians 

The number of Liberians seeking refuge at the SOS Children's Village in Monrovia has risen to 7,500, since fighting broke out last month between LURD rebels and troops loyal to President Charles Taylor, a former warlord now indicted for war crimes. Although the situation in the capital city has currently calmed somewhat since last week, the humanitarian situation is worsening considerably.

Although medications are becoming scarce, the SOS Children's Village is currently providing free-of-charge medical care for more than 300 people, most of which are suffering from acute diarrhoea. The organisation's medical personnel are being kept busy from 7am to 10pm. Food is also increasingly in short supply.

According to a report from a staff member in Gambia, who is in constant contact with the village in Monrovia, the WHO (World Health Organisation), in collaboration with the World Bank, has offered SOS Children's Villages much needed and complete first aid supplies.
