Community Project Coordinators
'Soccer for Development' is a project funded by the Canadian International Development Agency which aims to engage children and youth throughout Canada with global issues, through sport, and particularly soccer. SOS Children's Villages Canada is launching this project in partnership with the Canadian Soccer Association, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, and Play Soccer International. The 'Soccer for Development' project will be held in communities across Canada, and offer the opportunity for children and youth to learn about the challenges facing their peers around the world and the role of Canada in international development.
SOS Children's Villages is looking for coaches, parents, students and/or community members involved in their local soccer communities who recognize the power of sport to engage, educate and move young people towards action.
Required Skills/Attributes
- Involved in local soccer community
- Dedicated to community service
- Motivated, self starter
- Commitment to education and the welfare of children and youth
- Understanding of and interest in learning and sharing knowledge about world issues and international development
- Comfortable working with and gaining support from community partners - Experience with sporting events/activities
- Willing to commit approximately 2 hours per week, for up to 6 months.
Duties
- Launch, promote and coordinate a 'Soccer for Development' project in your community
- Coordinate Global Peace Games in partnership with SOS Children's Villages.
- Help facilitate twinning of local soccer team(s) with teams in developing nations
- Educate children and youth about global issues, such as poverty, health, and peace
Time commitment: Approx 2 hours per week May 2006 to October 2006
SOS Children's Villages will provide training, a facilitators manual, communications materials and related expenses.
