In the mid 1960s the idea of SOS Children's Villages reached also Sweden. On 2 July 1964 the Committee "Swedish Friends for SOS Children's Villages" (Kommittén för SOS-Barnbyarnas Vänner i Sverige) was brought to life in Stockholm. Its aim was to further and support SOS Children's Villages all over the world, especially in developing countries.
Due to different problems locally, SOS-Barnbyar Sverige, the official Swedish promoting association of SOS-Kinderdorf International, could only by founded in 1972 (on 29 May) by Mr. Otto Kron.
At the end of the 1970s the Swedish SOS Children's Villages associations was for the first time able to take over the responsibility for the financing of an entire SOS Children's Village, the SOS Children's Village Pune in India.
An important milestone in the history of SOS-Barnbyar was the participation of the Swedish association in 2002 in a joint web project, a web platform formed by initially SOS Sweden and three other SOS associations, which has enabled the Swedish association to recruit and serve new child and facility sponsors also online.
SOS Children's Villages Sweden does not run any SOS Children's Village facilities in the country. The association which is located in the capital Stockholm raises funds for the work of SOS Children's Villages in all parts of the world.
