SOS Children's Villages Haiti - Facts and Figures

Summary

At present, SOS Children's Villages is supporting Haitian children and young people by providing day care, education, vocational training and medical assistance in two different locations. There are currently three SOS Children's Villages in the country, which provide a loving homes and care for the needs of more than 500 orphaned and abandoned children.

Facts and Figures

  • Half of the Haitian population is under the age of 18
  • About 800 children in Cap Haitien are served by the 16 SOS Children’s Villages’ community centres there.
  • In Haiti’s capital city of Port-au-Prince alone, 26 SOS Children’s Villages’ community centres are helping to support between 2,300 to 3,000 children.
  • Only 70% of youth in Haiti are literate
  • The SOS Children’s Village in Santo received 400 unaccompanied and traumatized children following the earthquake. Soon afterwards, SOS Children’s Villages’ teams in Santo began managing the process of reuniting as many of these children as possible with their biological families.

SOS Haiti Through the Years

1978 - SOS Children’s Villages Haiti is established to care for orphaned and abandoned children.

1979 - 19 houses are built at SOS Children’s Village Santo to care for 180 children. In the same year, the Santo SOS School is built to provide children in the Village and the surrounding community with a quality education.

1989 - SOS Children’s Villages starts up operations in Cap Haitien with 22 family houses for about 220 children.

2012 - The Santo SOS School is enlarged with an additional building. SOS Children’s Villages supports the construction of a community school in Santo. The community school serves about 490 students.

2014 - Construction of SOS Children’s Village Les Cayes begins.The Santo SOS School serves and educates around1,300 children. 

2015 - Official inauguration of SOS Children’s Village Les Cayes planned.
