Children dancing in a welcoming dance in Ondangwa, NamibiaSOS Children’s Villages Namibia officially inaugurated The Green Family SOS Children’s Village Ondangwa on Thursday 26 August, 2010. The Village started operating taking in 40 children in six houses.

Serbarber Haufiku, Village Director of The Green Family SOS Children’s Village Ondangwa, began the official opening on 26 August with these words, ‘This Village is a home for future heroes and leaders.’ Showing off their budding talents, SOS children performed song and dance items throughout the programme.

A touching item which brought tears to many eyes was the hoisting of the Namibian and Canadian flags which was followed by the national anthems. ‘It is because of people with goodwill who open their hearts and contribute to change in the lives of children that make a difference in this world,’ said regional director Leutloa Moteetee. ‘Today we celebrate this milestone of providing loving homes for children in need because of such people as Don and Shirley Green from Canada, our warm-hearted friends.’

The Mayor of Ondangwa conveyed, ‘It is an indisputable fact that the plight of the Namibian child and the increase in vulnerability in our region requires creative solutions, immediate remedy and broad intervention. The cost of failure is vast. The welfare of our children, our future leaders, is at stake. SOS Children’s Villages and its facilities are an answer to prayer in helping to alleviate our children’s suffering.’

Matheus Amadhila, Chairperson of SOS Children’s Villages Namibia, summarised the day with these words, ‘Today we celebrate the opening of another village for the SOS Children’s Villages Association of Namibia with friends such as SOS Children’s Villages Canada, the Green family, the Ondangwa Town Council and Municipality, and the Government of the Republic of Namibia, without which this new Village would have remained only a dream.’
