The consequences of losing a mother are huge, anywhere. But there are places where such consequences are disastrous for children.

The consequences of losing a mother are huge, anywhere. But there are places where such consequences are disastrous for children.

Around the world, 145 million kids have no mother or family to support them. Orphaned or abandoned, their futures are at great risk.

  • Infants of mothers who do not survive delivery are more likely to die within two years.
  • Children under 10 years old whose mothers die are 3-10 times more likely to die within two years.
  • For children without mothers, enrolment in school is often delayed. Children are less likely to be immunized and more likely to suffer from malnutrition.

Through its Family Strengthening Programs, SOS Children’s Villages supports mothers in struggling families to gain skills to prevent child abandonment.

Losing a mother is a game changer. But there is hope. And you can help.
