From care to community: Twins giving back in the Philippines
It was in 2002, at seven months old, that Ruby Mark and Rey Mark, along with their two older siblings, were welcomed at SOS Children’s Villages in Samar, the Philippines.
Following the loss of their father due to illness, their mother faced overwhelming challenges. His untimely death left their mother in a state of grief and uncertainty. With limited income from part-time laundry work, she struggled to provide for her children’s needs. During this difficult time, she made a decision that would shape her children’s futures.
Throughout their 21-year stay at SOS Children’s Villages, the twins were cared for by three SOS mothers. Mama Eva, Auntie An, and Auntie Nora may have had unique parenting styles, but they all gave the twins unconditional love. These women became their guiding light, nurturing them through every stage of childhood and adolescence.
As the years passed, Ruby Mark and Rey Mark developed a love for playing soccer, learning the guitar, making friends, and most importantly, dreaming together. They shared a vision of building a better future, aspiring to achieve success, secure stable jobs, and provide for their biological family.
With their strong sibling bond and the support from SOS Children’s Villages, the brothers pursued higher education. In 2023, Rey Mark earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work, while Ruby Mark completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology. Their hard work and determination helped them take the next step in their professional journeys.
Rey Mark is a registered social worker supporting children and young people at SOS Children’s Villages in Bataan. Meanwhile, Ruby Mark works at the Department of Health, helping improve community health and supporting individuals in need of medical care.
“It is fulfilling to serve the children. I can see myself in them as I was when I was still a child, and I am happy to give back to SOS Children’s Villages. This home saved my family and me, and I am forever grateful.”

Today, they have built meaningful careers and are contributing to their communities. Through hard work and a strong foundation of support, these brothers have turned dreams into reality. Their journey shows what is possible when children grow up with the care, stability, and opportunities they need to thrive.
