A small loan, a big dream: Empowering her family and inspiring her community

Living in Bhopal, India, a city renowned for its rich history and vibrant culture, Amaya* once faced financial struggles that made providing a quality education for her children difficult. However, with the support of SOS Children’s Villages, she transformed her life from a homemaker into a thriving business owner.
Amaya’s family struggled to balance household expenses while ensuring their children received a good education. With financial assistance provided by SOS Children’s Villages, she expanded her small convenience store into a profitable business.
“My shop used to be very small, but after receiving help, I grew it into what it is today.”
With newfound confidence and financial stability, Amaya took charge of her household and diversified her income.
“Previously, I mainly did household chores, but now I run my own business. Over time, I have learned how to manage bills and finances. When my husband went to work, I used to feel alone, but now I have a purpose, a job, and the opportunity to interact with my community.”
One of the most significant outcomes of Amaya’s journey has been the impact on her children’s education. “My children study well, and I am very proud,” she said. With greater financial security, she could fully support their academic pursuits.
Beyond her family, Amaya’s success has inspired others in her community, fostering unity and resilience among the local women. Through a self-help group, they support, uplift, and learn from one another.
“The path we are on now is different because SOS Children’s Villages provides a level of support unlike any other organization. With a small loan, which I repaid within 24 months, I now have a self-sustaining business. They were flexible in how to repay it and always there to provide support.”
Amaya’s store has become vital to the local economy, attracting customers from nearby villages. Her financial independence has given her the confidence to dream even bigger.
“I now want to turn my shop into a digital business and create a computer café, so that my children can also be part of it when they are older,” Amaya says.
She envisions expanding her enterprise while involving her children, giving them the opportunity to carry it forward and secure their future.
