Mónica was accompanied to the ceremony at the SOS Children's Village Huehuetoca by team-mate and Mexican women's national goalkeeper Jennifer Molina. They were greeted by excited children and staff, before taking a tour of the children's village and visiting one of the SOS family houses.
After receiving her official "FIFA for SOS Children's Villages" ambassador certificate, Mónica said: "As an athlete, this is the least that I can do to help. What you do here is incredible, and the whole world should know what these children have: the love and care they deserve."
"For me, helping is more of an honour and a pleasure than a responsibility. I am very happy to be here and help. I love what a children's village represents and I never imagined I would be received with so much joy. This is like a big party!" Mónica said about the joyful reception of the children.
On behalf of all of the children in the care of SOS Children's Villages Huehuetoca, 10-year-old Rafael told Mónica that he admired her particularly for being a woman who engaged in what is typically considered a man's sport. After the ceremony, the two footballers from the Mexican national women's team headed for the sports field to play a match with the children, before posing for photographs and signing autographs.
