Israel: Mordechai Shpigler
Mordechai Shpigler, the former captain of the Israeli national team and one of the country's finest football players, joined the long list of FIFA/SOS Ambassadors in 2002. |
In 2004, he wrote football history when he was elected Israel's most outstanding player of the period 1954-2003, an election that formed part of a 2004 nomination organised by UEFA.
Shpigler officially became a FIFA/SOS Ambassador on 18 November 2002 in a ceremony held at the University of Beersheba, which was widely attended by various national celebrities. During this ceremony, children in the care of the SOS Children's Village in Neradim, Israel, delivered impressive dance and song performances.
The highlight of the ceremony was a short friendly match between a so-called "Team of Peace", consisting of Israeli and Palestinian players and including Shpigler and the Dean of the University, against the local "Hapoel Beersheba" side.
This game was followed by a friendly match between children from the SOS Children's Village in Neradim vs. pupils from the nearby Hadad Football School.
