At 16, Charlesetta* once felt discouraged and overwhelmed. Today, she speaks with confidence about her dream of becoming a doctor – thanks to the support she found through SOS Children’s Villages Liberia’s Family Strengthening Program.

Before the children’s club

“I was frustrated,” she recalls, reflecting on her struggles before joining the children’s club at her school in Paynesville. She often felt shy and lacked the self-assurance to speak up.

Children’s clubs, established in many communities supported by SOS Children’s Villages, provide safe spaces where young people can gather to learn about their rights, mental health, and leadership and life skills. For Charlesetta and her classmates, the club empowered them to gain confidence and continue growing.

Finding her voice

“I used to be shy, and I didn’t know how to speak out,” Charlesetta admits. “But through the children’s club, I’ve learned to make informed decisions. I now know what to do if I ever face danger, and feel empowered to speak up.”

Charlesetta’s newfound confidence has helped her make big plans for her future. “I want to become a doctor. I now believe that anything is possible with hard work and the right support,” she says with a smile.

Support from social workers

Lorpu Sarlie, a social worker at SOS Children’s Villages Liberia, has seen Charlesetta’s transformation firsthand:

“Charlesetta used to be very shy. She rarely talked or participated in group discussions, but now she is one of the active students. She asks questions and engages in healthy dialogues during activities.”

For Lorpu, these changes highlight the program’s impact beyond academics. “Young people are starting to believe in themselves. They are more engaged, and their enthusiasm for learning is inspiring,” she adds.

A safe space for growth

Through the SOS Children’s Villages children’s club, Charlesetta and other young people have explored important topics including health and wellbeing, child protection and leadership. These sessions have not only increased knowledge but also fostered a supportive community among the students.

“We learn together and help each other,” Charlesetta explains. “It’s a safe space where we can express ourselves without fear,” she adds.

Looking ahead

For Charlesetta, the children’s club is more than an extracurricular activity – it is where her dream of becoming a doctor began to take shape. For SOS Children’s Villages, her journey proves that when young people are nurtured to believe in themselves and receive ongoing care and support, they can build brighter futures and positively impact their communities.
