Venezuela earthquake response: Protecting children. Supporting families.

On June 24, 2026, two devastating earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck northern Venezuela within seconds of each other, causing widespread destruction across La Guaira State, Caracas and neighbouring communities. Homes, schools and hospitals collapsed, while repeated aftershocks continue to force families to sleep outdoors or in temporary shelters.

An estimated 1.8 million people, including 680,000 children, need humanitarian assistance.

Thousands have been killed or injured, tens of thousands have been displaced, and many families remain separated as search and rescue operations continue. Entire neighbourhoods have been reduced to rubble, while damaged roads, power outages and disrupted communications are making it difficult to reach those most in need.

The impact on children

For children, disasters are about far more than damaged buildings.

They can mean separation from loved ones, interrupted education, emotional trauma, and increased risks to their safety and wellbeing. As schools become emergency shelters and communities struggle to recover, children need protection, stability and trusted adults more than ever.

Responding where children need us most

SOS Children's Villages Venezuela is mobilizing an emergency response to protect children and support families during this critical time.

Our immediate priorities include:

  • Protecting children and keeping families together.
  • Providing mental health and psychosocial support for children and caregivers.
  • Providing emergency shelter and essential household items.
  • Restoring access to safe water and sanitation, particularly in schools and temporary shelters.
  • Meeting urgent food and nutrition needs, including support for infants and young children.
  • Helping children return to learning through child-friendly spaces and temporary learning environments.

Every aspect of our response is designed to protect children while supporting the families and communities they rely on. From emergency relief to child protection and education, we are helping children recover safely while laying the foundations for long-term recovery.
