Frequently asked questions
-
At SOS Children’s Villages, the safety, dignity and wellbeing of every child in our care is our highest priority. To protect their privacy and respect their individual stories, we do not display profiles of individual children. Instead, sponsors are matched with a child based on need and availability. This helps ensure that support is distributed fairly and no child is left behind.
You’re welcome to request a specific country for your sponsorship, though please note that not all countries are currently available. Once your sponsorship begins, you’ll receive information about the child you are supporting, along with regular updates that help you stay connected to their journey and the difference you are helping make.

An SOS Village is a supportive, family-like community where children without parental care grow up in a stable and caring environment. Each child lives in a family home with an SOS mother or caregiver and other children who become like siblings. These homes are part of a larger village setting, which include shared spaces and access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and psychosocial support.
We work to keep biological siblings together, and whenever possible, to reunite children with their families of origin if it is safe and in their best interest. We aim to ensure every child feels a sense of belonging, security and has the opportunity to thrive in a setting that feels like home.
-
We kindly ask that you do not send packages, as they may not always reach the child and could unintentionally create inequality among other children in the village.
We encourage you to consider a monetary gift to your sponsored child’s personal savings account. This account is held in their name and becomes available to them when they transition to independence. You can make this contribution online or by calling us at 613-232-3309. 100% of your gift goes directly into the child's account.
If you would still like to send something, consider small items like stickers or postcards, which are easy to share and always appreciated.
-
For both child and village sponsorships, 80.5% of your monthly contribution directly supports your sponsored child or our village programs, providing essential care, education and stability for children and young people. This percentage is determined and guaranteed by our Board of Directors.
-
Your sponsorship helps provide a safe and caring home, nutritious meals, access to quality education, healthcare, and individualized emotional support. It contributes to the child's overall development and promotes stability, resilience and a sense of belonging. In SOS Children’s Villages, this care often includes siblings and is embedded in a supportive community that surrounds each child with trusted guidance and consistent relationships.
-
Your welcome package includes everything you need to write to your sponsored child, including their mailing address and ID number. Be sure to include both the child’s name and ID number in any letter you send.
Write in a simple, friendly, and age-appropriate way. Share everyday things like where you live, the weather, your hobbies, or how you celebrate special occasions.
Photos or postcards are a nice addition and are often used in school as part of geography lessons. Please remember that your sponsored child may come from a different religious, cultural or economic background. Be thoughtful and respectful of their context when sending letters and pictures.

You’re welcome to visit an SOS Children’s Villages program. To ensure the protection and
well-being of the children in our care, you are required to:
- Complete the Sponsor Visit Guide form
- Attend a one-hour virtual child safeguarding training
- Provide a police background check for each visitor aged 18 and over
This process requires a minimum of two months’ advance notice to complete. Contact us at 613-232-3309 or by email at info@soschildrensvillages.ca to begin this process.

Sponsorship typically continues until the child reaches adulthood and is ready to live independently. This is around age 18, but support can extend into their early 20s if they are pursuing higher education, vocational training, or other transitional support. SOS Children’s Villages is committed to helping each young person build a strong foundation for their future, and your sponsorship contributes meaningfully to that journey.
-
We understand that financial situations can change. If continuing your current sponsorship isn't possible, we’d be happy to talk with you about modifying your support. One option is switching to a $25/month village sponsorship, which still provides meaningful help to children and young people in our care.
If you do need to pause or cancel, please contact us at 613-232-3309 or by email at info@soschildrensvillages.ca.

Children are welcomed into SOS Children’s Villages care when they are without adequate parental care, due to loss, abuse, neglect, conflict, or poverty. We work in close collaboration with local authorities and communities to ensure that our support reaches those who need it most. Our priority is always to act in the best interest of the child, while promoting long-term family and community-based solutions whenever possible.
-
Children and young people are supported in practicing the religion or belief system they inherited from their families. If a child’s faith background is unknown, they are guided by the religious or cultural traditions most common in their community. Many SOS Children’s Villages include children from diverse religious backgrounds. We nurture an environment of respect, inclusion, and mutual understanding.
SOS Children’s Villages does not promote any particular religion. We uphold every child’s right to maintain their beliefs and practices while growing up in a supportive and caring community.
-
SOS Children’s Villages supports young people to access education and training in their home countries, to help them build a stable future within their communities.
In some cases, studying abroad may be considered if the program is not available locally. This depends on a careful assessment of the young person's academic performance, motivation, language skills, and readiness to manage cultural differences.

Other ways to support
Village sponsorship
For just $25/month, you can help support an entire SOS Children’s Village, providing children who have lost parental care with a safe home, nutritious food, education, and a caring community. Your gift helps ensure every child in the village can grow up surrounded by stability and love.
Monthly donation
A monthly gift in any amount helps children grow up with the support they need to thrive. Undesignated donations allow us to plan ahead, respond to urgent needs, and make sure no child is left behind when gaps in funding arise.
