Other community work in Maputo
Since SOS Children's Villages in Maputo opened its gates in 1992, the work has continued to expand. Today, SOS Children's Villages is not only caring for children in need, but is also providing invaluable support and offering hope to local families and communities through a number of facilities and programs.
The SOS Kindergarten, which accommodates up to 100 children, has been in operation since 1992 and consists of four group rooms, a kitchen, and a playground.
At the SOS Children's Villages School, primary and secondary school education is offered to up to 830 children. There are 24 classrooms, a canteen and a laboratory.
In the mid-1990s, the decision was made to build an SOS Youth Facility, which finally opened its doors in 1999. Up to 32 youths who have already outgrown SOS Children's Villages stay there during their vocational training or higher education and prepare for an independent life.
In 2002, an SOS Social Centre was put into operation to offer help to HIV/AIDS affected families in the area. The aim of this facility is to support and strengthen socially and economically disadvantaged families, avoiding their breakdown and thus enabling the children to grow up with their biological relatives.
It offers home-based care, supports two community kindergartens with nutritional programs for 100 to 120 children each, and runs a school placement programme. Additionally, measures are taken to improve families' living conditions and to offer them psychosocial support. Up to 2,000 children and their families receive support through this outreach program.
