Children and families in crisis: Our response in Palestine
Conflict is tearing families apart. In Gaza and the West Bank, SOS Children’s Villages Palestine is protecting children, reuniting families, and restoring hope.
The population of Gaza – nearly half of which are children – endure an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe. Hunger and disease are rampant due to the collapse of aid access and basic services. Children and young people are among the most exposed to violence, displacement, and deprivation. This is even more true for those without, or at risk of losing, parental care. Thousands of children have been killed, and tens of thousands have lost one or both parents. In addition to their own trauma, many children carry the burdens of the adults who care for them. The human, humanitarian and psychological consequences for children and families from Gaza are already substantial, and will be long-lasting.
"The ongoing situation in Palestine has created immense challenges for our families and children. The impact on children, in particular, is profound. Daily struggles for basic needs, exposure to violence, and the constant threat to their sense of security shape their daily lives." - SOS Children's Villages Palestine
Our response
SOS Children’s Villages Palestine is deploying urgent support where it is needed most. As of late August, nearly 50,000 individuals (70% children) have received assistance.
Key support includes:
200 children without parental care or separated from their families received interim family-like care.
417 children without parental care or separated from their families received community-based alternative care.
- 1,300 children continued to learn through the Education in Emergencies Project.
Ongoing support for children, young people and families impacted by this crisis includes:
Mental health and psychosocial support, such as family counselling, group counselling, individual counselling, and recreational activities.
Education for displaced children living in temporary shelter camps and surrounding areas.
Direct humanitarian support to the most affected families to avoid further family separation.
Emergency care services for unaccompanied or separated children, including identification, registration, and placement in safe and nurturing environments.
Emergency financial support to families facing difficulties, including female-headed households and youth.
