Family reunification in Namibia strengthens a child’s network of care
Ishmael grew up in the care of SOS Children's Villages Namibia in Ondangwa. At age six, when his mother could no longer care for him, he joined the village community. It became his home and a place where he felt seen, heard, and valued.
“They gave me a community. They gave me a home,” says Ishmael.
While SOS Children’s Villages provided education, emotional support, and a safe environment, the connection to his biological family was never forgotten. As part of SOS Children’s Villages' family reintegration program, Ishmael visited them during school holidays.
Ishmael's family applied for him to visit during the break between school semesters. Before each visit, social workers assessed the home environment to ensure it was suitable, helping to maintain family connections and strengthen bonds. Over the years, these visits became part of a carefully planned process to permanently reunite him with his family.
“It wasn’t a sudden change,” Ishmael recalls. “The visits helped us get familiar again. It was well thought out.”
Working closely with Ishmael, his mother, and social workers, SOS Children’s Villages carefully determined that the family could support his return, including his continued university studies. After a series of visits, conversations, and preparations, he was successfully reunited with his mother and younger brother.
To support the family's long-term stability, SOS Children’s Villages worked with Ishmael's mother to identify a sustainable source of income. Together, they turned her business idea into a plan for a small neighbourhood shop selling groceries and freshly prepared food and provided the practical support needed to get the business up and running. This investment was critical to building the family's financial stability while both children pursued their education.
The transition to living with his biological family felt natural, not abrupt. Ishmael credits this to the consistent care he received, the life skills he developed while growing up at SOS Children’s Villages, and the years spent maintaining connections with his biological family and community. Those relationships gave him a deeper connection to his roots, family history, and sense of identity.
“SOS Children’s Villages showed us what a home should be like. It didn’t feel like I was leaving − it felt like growing.”
Finally, Ishmael has a heartfelt message for the donors who make SOS Children’s Villages’ work possible:
“You may never see the faces you’re helping, but the impact is real. I know what it means for someone to be given a chance to grow. Your support isn’t just changing one life, it’s changing communities, it’s planting seeds.”
Family reunification is not about replacing one family with another. Instead, it is about strengthening the network of relationships around a child or young person so they can move forward with confidence.
Today, Ishmael is thriving because of the many people who have walked alongside him – his biological family, his SOS family, social workers, and generous supporters whose belief in children and families helped make his journey possible.
By supporting the Namibia Hope and Resilience Fund, you can help more children like Ishmael grow up with the care, connections, and opportunities they need to thrive.
