Liberia: George Weah
George Weah was involved in various activities with SOS Children's Villages long before he was officially named a FIFA/SOS Ambassador in 1998. The Liberian star player has delighted children in the organisation's care by taking the time to play football with them on various occasions. |

Weah, a Liberian international and 1995 FIFA Footballer of the Year, paid several visits to various SOS Children's Villages in Africa. In 1996, Weah and the complete Liberian national squad stopped by the SOS Children's Village in Ennerdale, South Africa, and played football with the children for two whole hours.
When FIFA awarded Weah the Fair Play Prize in January 1997, the Liberian football star immediately donated this prize to the SOS Children's Village in Monrovia. Together with wife, Weah visited this children's village in his native Liberia on 23 June 1997, to mark the International SOS Children's Village day. The programme back then included live music and football matches for the children.
On 27 May 1998, Weah was presented the official FIFA/SOS Ambassador's certificate in a ceremony at the SOS Children's Village in Monrovia. A few days later, Weah and his old school team challenged the football team of SOS Children's Villages in a friendly match that ended in a 2-2 draw.
