Real Madrid defender and Italian national team captain, Fabio Cannavaro, was presented as a "FIFA for SOS Children's Villages" ambassador at the "Oscar del Calcio" gala organised by the Italian Players' Association (AIC) in January 2006.
Cannavaro is one of four Italians to have accepted this honorary role and to have expressed their full support for the 6 villages for 2006 charity campaign.

Italian footballer Christan Vieri has been a FIFA/SOS ambassador since 1999, while Francesco Totti and former referee Pierluigi Collina were also officially presented at the "Oscar del Calcio" gala in Milan, in January 2006.

Among his many feats, Cannavaro, considered one of the best defenders in the world, participated in the 1998 and 2002 World Cups, and helped his former club Parma lift the 1999 UEFA Cup. At the "Oscar del Calcio" gala, Cannavaro pocketed the award for best Italian defender in the 2004/2005 football season.
