Sri Lanka's second SOS Children's Village is located at Nuwara-Eliya in the central hill region, at an altitude of 2,000 m. The first children were admitted in 1984. Due to its high altitude, the SOS Children's Village enjoys a particularly cool climate, and the town of the same name is one of the island's favourite holiday resorts. That is why the children from the SOS Children's Village Piliyandala often spend their holidays at the holiday camp in Nuwara-Eliya.
SOS Children's Village Nuwara Eliya consists of ten family houses, a community house and the necessary administrative buildings. Older youths from the SOS Children's Village normally move to the SOS Youth Facility when they start a vocational training course or go on to higher education in order to learn to shoulder responsibility and to start making their own decisions.
The SOS Social Centre and the SOS Kindergarten are open to the population of the neighbourhood. At the kindergarten, up to 60 children can be taught in four group rooms. The SOS Social Centre provides medical care, counselling and crafts classes. It also coordinates the local family strengthening programmes. Next to the SOS Children's Village, there is a home for retired SOS mothers.
