SOS Children's Villages in Guarda
The inauguration of the third SOS Children's Village in Portugal took place in October 1986. The SOS Children's Village Guarda is located in the northern part of the country at a distance of about 15 kms from the city centre of the town of Guarda. It has been set up on a hilly site and offers a beautiful view over the city. The region around Guarda, where Portugal reaches its topographically highest level, is known for its cold - and sometimes even white - winters.
The SOS Children's Village Guarda consists of the family houses, the Village Director's house and an administrative building. In addition to that, an SOS Youth Facility has been set up. (The young people move to the Youth House, in order to prepare for their independent life.) A beautiful playground has been laid out under big old chestnut trees. The children from the SOS Children's Village attend public primary and secondary schools in the vicinity.
