Masiel, 16, arrived at SOS Children’s Villages Dominican Republic in Santiago with her older sister seven years ago, after the death of their mother. She carried deep emotional scars and anxiety from losing the only place she knew as home, a rural community in the Province of Santiago.

In the beginning, Masiel exhibited disruptive behaviour, conflicts with her peers, and overwhelming sadness. The unanswered questions surrounding her mother’s death and emotional trauma significantly impacted her wellbeing.

A holistic approach to healing

Recognizing that she needed support, a multidisciplinary team came together to provide comprehensive care while changes to her environment supported her healing. She transferred to a new school, engaged in activities that matched her interests, and, along with her sister, was cared for by an empathetic and patient caregiver with whom she nurtured a secure, healthy bond.

A dedicated SOS facilitator built a strong connection with Masiel, making it easier for her to engage. Through this consistent support, Masiel’s anxiety and sadness gradually diminished.

Discovering her talents

As Masiel found emotional stability, her talents began to shine. Her academic performance flourished, and she showed a natural gift for communication and leadership. Without formal training, she displayed impressive skills in hairstyling, braiding, and acrylic nail design. Recognizing her potential, she was encouraged to pursue professional training in hairdressing.

Strong sibling bond

Throughout her journey, Masiel’s relationship with her older sister has been a constant source of strength and stability. Although she is the younger sibling, Masiel often encourages her sister to stay focused on her future. Their bond is rooted in mutual care and support, as they work together toward a shared goal of preparing for independent life.

A bright future ahead

Masiel has actively participated in life skills training, covering topics such as healthy relationships, emotion management, and conflict resolution. She has also engaged in educational activities that strengthen her social development and prepare her for independence.

Despite the challenges she faced early on, Masiel’s achievements today are a source of pride. Her behaviour has improved significantly, and she is now excelling at a well-known polytechnic school in Santiago.

Masiel’s vision for her future is clear. She plans to complete high school and pursue a degree in medicine while simultaneously building her own business as a professional hairstylist. Her resilience, determination, and ability to balance her ambitions reflect her steadfast dedication to success.

Masiel’s words of inspiration
